Beyond Alliance has announced the Superpollutant Action Initiative – a USD$100 million global campaign aimed at escalating efforts against the effects of powerful warming agents that are increasingly harming the planet.
ERADICATING HARMFUL GASES
Overseen by Beyond Alliance, the Superpollutant Action Initiative will accelerate the proactive reduction of super pollutants, including methane, black carbon, and refrigerant gases, which account for approximately 50 percent of all global warming to date.
The goal of the initiative is to provide positive climate, health, and economic benefits by scaling projects that cut the harmful gases.
The Beyond Alliance initiative comprises leading corporations including Amazon, Autodesk, Figma, Google, JPMorganChase, Salesforce, and Workday, that aim to deploy USD$100 million through to 2030.
“Super pollutants are a major part of the equation to limit atmospheric warming. Experts agree that eliminating them where we can is one of the most powerful levers we have to deliver near-term impact, playing a vital and complementary role to removing carbon dioxide (CO2).
“Google is excited to join our peers in accelerating progress to eliminate super pollutants,” comments Randy Spock, Carbon Credits and Removals Lead for Google.
ENACTING MEANINGFUL CHANGE
Founded in 2020 with a mission to drive market-based climate action, Beyond Alliance is a business-led coalition of companies and NGOs that scale corporate funding for high-integrity climate solutions.
As part of the Superpollutant Action Initiative, Beyond Alliance is supporting participating companies through research, reporting, and knowledge-sharing guidance, among other associated activities.
“We are in a decisive decade for the climate, and reducing super pollutants is one of the few levers that can bend the curve quickly,” shares Luke Pritchard, Director of Beyond Alliance.
“This initiative shows how companies can deploy private capital where it matters most – unlocking solutions that cut warming, improve air quality, and deliver measurable results now, while creating a clear pathway for others to follow.”
Helping to identify the best strategies to implement the initiative, Beyond Alliance has collaborated with Carbon Containment Lab and leading scientific experts to create a global roadmap highlighting how companies can best support progress toward super pollutant action.
Released later this year, the roadmap will show how and where private capital can be best deployed to achieve the greatest reach. The plan will be made publicly available to enable other companies, investors, and governments that are not yet part of the alliance to accelerate impact.
WHY SUPER POLLUTANTS MATTER
Super pollutants are generated from a vast scope of industries, primarily including energy production, agriculture, waste management, and cooling system sectors.
Although most super pollutants remain in the atmosphere for less time than CO2, they have a more acute, concentrated impact, trapping heat tens to thousands of times more powerfully, making their reduction increasingly significant.
“Reducing super pollutants is one of the best ways to limit near-term warming, delivering critical benefits for air quality, public health, and agricultural resilience.
“A multi-stakeholder approach can help accelerate solutions at scale – Salesforce is proud to support this initiative with our peers,” says Max Scher, Vice President of Sustainability for Salesforce.
“Cutting super pollutants like methane is one of the quickest, most cost-effective ways to bolster energy security, strengthen infrastructure resilience, and safeguard our economy from immediate climate risks,” adds Taylor Wright, Head of Operational Sustainability for JPMorganChase.
